What to Know Before Buying a Multifunction
The Basics
All multifunction copiers are digital, although all are not laser, some are inkjet machines. Laser copiers are less expensive to operate,  the cost per copy of a laser machine is much less expensive than an inkjet. Most inkjet copiers can cost over ten cents for an average copy.

The only advantage to an inkjet copier is its initial cost, they practically give them to you so you will buy their tiny expensive ink cartridges.  Solid ink technology is somewhat similar to inkjet but the image quality is far superior and the cost is less per page.

Duplex

Duplex is the ability to do double sided prints (Front and Back). Duplex can reduce the cost of paper  by utilizing both sides of the paper. If duplex is a feature you are interested in you need a Reversing Automatic Document Feeder . If you have a sheet of paper with print on both sides, the RADF will scan  both sides.

Multifunction

Almost all digital copier come standard with some multifunction capabilities. Usually they will come with the ability to copy and print and sometimes  scan and fax. Other options can usually be added to allow the digital copy machine to fax, fax to email, internet fax, network scan, and network print. While some of these options can be expensive, businesses who are limited on space may want to take advantage of the multifunction capabilities.

Paper Supply

Paper capacity is also important.  If your business does a large volume of letter and legal sized copying, a second paper drawer is recommended. Additional paper drawer vary in size and capacity. A universal paper tray is user adjustable for the desired paper size.

11 X 17 also referred to as ledger size is only available on higher priced equipment, if you need this ability, please check with the sales agent to verify this feature. Some copiers have the ability to scan ledger size but only copy up to legal size.

Cost Per Copy

Is often misleading to the consumer. Manufactures rate machines using different coverage areas which greatly affects toner yield.  Most manufactures use about 5% coverage area to rate toner yield, so if normally run pages with 15% page coverage your toner cost is tripled.  Drum, developer, oil, and fuser cartridges are  usually rated by a number of pages printed.  Dry toner machines are generally much cheaper to operate than inkjet systems.

Some Terms

ADF-  Automatic document feeders allow users to copy stacks of originals. The ADF positions each original on the platen, makes the designated number of copiers, and ejects the original into a receiving tray; this process is repeated with each subsequent original.
SADF- A semiautomatic document feeder will position each original on the platen, but the user must feed each original individually.
RADF- A reversing automatic document feeder is a type of ADF that incorporates a device to flip over two-sided originals to allow for automatic 2:2 duplexing. The RADF positions the two-sided originals on the platen, makes the designated number of copies, flips the originals over, and immediately re-feeds it for copying. The process is repeated for all subsequent two-sided originals.
RDH- A recirulating document handler is actually a type of ADF that is designed to make copies in sets. The RDH positions each original on the platen, makes one copy, and returns each original to the stack of originals. The stack of originals is re-fed for each copy set requested. This process ensures that after copying is completed, the user has a stack of originals and copy sets in order. RDHs also eliminate the need for sorter bins since the output can be offset stacked or finished. Certain RDHs incorporate an inverting device that flips over two-sided originals to allow for automatic 2:2 duplexing.
CFF- A continuous (or computer) forms feeder (CFF) automatically advances and positions each page of a continuous form.
